A couple of days ago Microsoft decided to drop the price of Microsoft Sharepoint Designer 2007 to……well, $0. Here’s what they had to say:

We are implementing a number of changes to promote and facilitate even more customization efforts on top of the SharePoint platform including making SharePoint Designer 2007 available as a free download.

It may seem like Microsoft are open sourcing Sharepoint to try and regain its standing in regards to its web design products.
Let’s see what changes Microsoft actually make on Sharepoint. It should be interesting.

Dock The Current Windows To The Left/Right Side Of The Screen

Press the Windows key + Left/Right key to dock it to the left side of the screen.

Shift The Window From One Monitor To Another

If you are using two or more monitors, then you might want to move the Windows from one to another. There is a very simple way to do it. All you have to do is press the Windows Key + Shift Key + Left or Right Key, depending on what monitor you want to move it to.

Custom Power Button

There is an option to replace the “Shut Down” button with another action, if you rarely shut down the computer, but you more often restart it or put it on sleep. Right click the Start Button, go to Properties and choose the ‘Power Boot Action” to do whatever you want, from the given options.

Missing Applications

Mail and a few other features are missing on 7. You can get them back by downloading Windows Live Essentials to get Live Photo Gallery, Mail, Messenger, Movie Maker, and other features from here.

Control-Alt-Delete

If you like using ctrl+alt+del but want only the task manager to pop up, try ctrl+shift+esc. 

Get Quick Launch toolbar back

Right-click the taskbar, choose Toolbars / New Toolbar

In the folder selection dialog, enter the following string and hit OK:

%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Turn off the “lock the taskbar” setting, and right-click on the divider. Make sure that “Show text” and “Show title” are disabled and the view is set to “small icons”.

Use the dividers to rearrange the toolbar ordering to choice, and then lock the taskbar again.
 
Remove The Sidebar

Windows 7 doesn’t seem to feature the sidebar anymore, but it still exists and runs in the background, being launched automatically at startup. So if you want to get rid of it, there are two ways. The easier one is to press the Windows Key, type MSCONFIG.EXE, click the Startup tab and clear the Sidebar box. The hard way is to press the Windows key, type “regedit”, find and delete the registry key at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. This can save you some RAM consumed with no use.

If you think the touch features on the Apple iPhone and the iPod Touch were impressive, think again. You’ll be “blown away by what’s coming in Windows 7,” according to a blog post by Hilton Locke, a software test engineer at Microsoft.

Windowswill add touch technology to the operating system. And while moving files around using your fingertips on a mobile might not speed things up that much, touch technology can really make a difference on a standard-sized computer screen.

The revelation follows on from the first sightings of the Dell Latitude XT tablet (see it in action here). This new machine has what’s called ‘capacitive touch capability’, meaning that you won’t have to apply any pressure for the tablet to recognise your input. Rival tablets usually require a certain amount of force for the system to recognise user interaction.

The lightweight machine weighs just under 2kg and features a 12.1-inch convertible tablet screen, making it one of the thinnest and lightest convertibles available, Dell said.

Emerging multi-touch capabilities

Dell says the Latitude XT tablet is a “forerunner to emerging multi-touch capabilities that allow the use of more than one finger for tasks such as zoom and repositioning a picture”. Sounds promising for future models. “We are listening and aim to exceed customers’ expectations,” said Margaret Franco, director of Dell’s product group.

Trade-offs

“Until now, customers have been forced to make trade-offs in tablet functionality to have usable systems. With capacitive touch technology, the Dell Latitude XT will revolutionise the way customers interact with their systems, allow customers to take full advantage of tablet technology and enable customers to get more done with greater speed and precision,” Franco added.

There’s also a built-in daylight viewing display, full-size keyboard with dual pointing, up to 64GB solid state drive and up to 120GB hard drive capacity. The machine can be specified with Intel Core 2 Solo and Duo ULV processors, and has ATI Radeon X1250 UMA integrated graphics.

The Dell Latitude XT tablet computer is listed on Dell’s US website, and will be available to order by the end of the year. Pricing starts at $2,499 (£1,223).
